The phenomenon of art as a way of life traversing through the sacred and the profane is the essence underlying the unique collection of 20 original art works specially made by a select group of 40 creative individuals working together in pairs.

Gallery Art & Soul (1, Madhuli, Shivsagar Estate, Worli, Mumbai-400 018) presented them at its venue in the third week of December 2007.

The event revolved around striking a formula derived from eclectic creative partnerships as often witnessed in fashion shows and furniture displays and for that matter, high-profile. Of course, the event show ‘Vistaar’ was something more than that.

Sculptor Gagan Vij and fashion designer Manish Arora formed partnership to make a garden umbrella, whereas designer duo Rakesh Thakore and David Abraham interpreted artist Sujata Bajaj’s calligraphic art into succinct stoles.

Father-daughter Satish and Alpana Gujral designed some interesting jewellery items. Gunjan Gupta and Anamika Khanna conceived a special chest of drawers. A red colored bike developed jointly by renowned artist Chintan Upadhyay and designer Arjun Khanna drew everyone’s attention.

According to, Aparajita Jain, the brain behind the event, it was difficult to bring together the artists and designers. In some cases the two did not even meet and worked on the piece of creation separately.

Tarana Khubhchandani of Gallery Art & Soul had organized a similar show a couple of years ago. But then the artists were only provided various materials and objects to paint or work on. For this event they actually collaborated with the product designers.

VISTAAR attempted to redefine canons of artistic practice and its aesthetics as well as lifestyle. It focused on quality and exclusivity immersed in art, craft and design to make a poignant statement on art as a way of life.

The project took the diverse forms of visual arts beyond their restricted domains to place them onto an extended and magnificent pedestal of exclusive lifestyle seeped in beauty, functionality and luxury.

The buzz is that this unique art and design show is heading to Dubai. Stay tuned!
