Indian art gets a bigger canvas abroad
Indian art is all set to witness rising interest in the West. Especially top quality works could rise in value.
This is provided the western buyers enter Indian art in a big way, according to Jay A Levenson, the director of NY based The Museum of Modern Art (international program). He has been quoted by Economic Times as saying: “As world attention gradually gets trained on India’s rapid economic growth, the non-Indian community abroad sure is looking at Indian art as a window to the country’s culture.”
He is planning to come to India with his curators to boost understanding of the Indian art trends. He visited India five years ago to take part in a workshop at the NGMA, New Delhi.
The knowledge about 20th century Indian art among western people is still inadequate, he added. “The knowledge base is still rather limited. Publications on modern Indian art trends are not enough. Americans still perceive India as an ancient land; they still cannot view it as a young nation.
