The ‘Divine Feminine’ shows
Since April, Apparao Galleries has been hosting a series of exhibitions and events revolving around the theme of the ‘Divine Feminine’.
The 2nd floor gallery first had a show of New Delhi based Arjuna. The artist created a body of serigraphs of Goddess Lakshmi and the divine devi in the style resembling urban popular culture.
The title of the show was ‘DEVI n ATION: The return of the goddess’. The meaning exuded was a curious one with a pun here on the word ‘Devi Nation’ and ‘Deviation’. An explanatory essay mentioned: “Devi Nation denotes a nation of devis – a large body of work or apparently a landmark body of work. ‘Deviation’ indicates the fact that this perhaps is not the same; it’s a reinterpretation. So we’re communicating that the holy goddess is returning in a rather huge body of work, deviating from the way it was traditionally done.
The ground floor gallery hosted a group show of artists who worked on the same subject – in a metamorphic as well as physical context. The artists featured were Sophie Jo, Saumya Kanti Mukhopadhyaya, Manisha Raju, Cheenu Pillai, Mark Rathinaraj, Avishek Sen, Premlatha Seshadri, and Basanth Peringode
The Apparao Infinity presents an exquisite collection of majestic miniature watercolors based on the ‘yantra’s Devi devotees meditate on, when they are offering specific poojas or rituals.
