An existential reflection by Rajesh.p.s.

‘My style of working is a sort of deconstruction or assemblage.’

artist interview rajesh.psRajesh.p.s. is an artist with a mission. He has joined a quest of every human being to understanding and discovering. The god like persona of the artist-creator is slowly subsumed by a heterogeneous movement of forces that shape the image as if it were of something of the complexity of the present.

Q: What is the core idea of the show? How did it come about?
A: The concept about the works revolves around the experience and survival of human being from the ages in a philosophical contest. I take this opportunity to understand, to search the same inquiries through the history, myth etc. and to compare with comtemporory situation.

This whole body of work represents biblical characters. These characters are taken from ‘Last Supper’ (biblical theme) - The search as what the situation was after the crusification, resurrection and how they survived for their existence. I hope that it is visible here, directly or indirectly.

Q: Can you throw light on the key works on view in your new show?
A: These works are all interlinked and at the same time can be seen individually. I have divided the characters for their individual platform, trying to express them at a human level. There is one work – a kind of installation - with 11 portraits standing as a historical monumental aspect because I believe that after the resurrection they were there for to lead

Other sculpture - human figure standing on wall - is representing Judas. For this character I have tried to evolve more flexibility as possible because I wanted to express the sense of helplessness. So I created the composition with wall and with the help of light that an isolated circumstance - inner as well as outer.

Q: What does the works collectively indicate?
A: I wish to interpret in a strong direction. I have to express my vision so I have chosen these titles in a philosophical manner. Also there is a scope to multiple interpretations in the present times in context of the search of existence and survival of human beings. ‘From were we are now’- an existential reflection’ is a quest of every human being to understanding oneself, directly or indirectly connected to ‘Existentialism’.

Q: How will you define your work in terms of style and working methods?
A: My style of working is a sort of deconstruction or assemblage. I have tried to develop the feel that some scattered wooden pieces are coming together. I used this method in some of my earlier works because I want to break the constraints of traditional wooden sculpture making. I want to explore flexibility of wood as a potential medium. I wish to take its both material as well as conceptual aspects. So I have tried to keep the primitive essence with the help of natural quality of wood.

For the new series of works I have used very hard wood like neamwood its give more roughness for surface. I am trying to make a strong outline of forms with negative and positive spaces, which is visible on surface. I am either adding or removing the pieces. There is a tension created between them. This vibration fulfills the empty spaces and allows a rhythmic movement.

Q: What are your preferred media?
A: Sculpture and drawing are my preferred media. I prefer working with wood, terracotta and other natural materials. I wish to express the character of medium, whichever I use, and it helps me develop my thought process.

Q: How has been the viewer response to the works?
A: The response was good. I got an amazing experience while sharing my ideas to people. They are enjoying both the form and the concept.
