Artist Interviews
Jatin Das on his art and more
“There’s too much intellectualizing of art, too much analyzing,” veteran artist Jatin Das says in a recent interview.
When you see a painting, it states everything. Then why discuss it?” he asks in an interview with Kishore Singh. This is what the versatile artist had to say on eve of his recent exhibition in New Delhi after a gap of nine long years. He has had shows in Kolkata and Mumbai in 2007, in Dubai in 2006, and one in Greece.
His signature accessory is the jhola that seems never to leave his ageing albeit agile shoulder. The versatile artist has made the nude his trademark. Into his fifth decade as a prolific artist, his fascination with the human form remains intact. Interestingly, he argues that he does not really paint nudes. He reasons: “They would be called nude if they got out of the clothes that they wore. But my figures are always without clothes; they are not nude but only bare bodies.”
The torso is the focus of his painting - in oil, watercolor or conte - with nothing, which is derivative. “There’s no architecture, no time or place where they exist, so you happen to see them in your context, and, also in the context of what they want to depict- a mélange of emotions like joy, sorrow, suffering and anguish”.
While Jatin Das may quell those romantic notions about inspiration, mood, or creativity, associating painting to ‘work, just like anyone else’, the art connoisseurs appreciate the vitality and finesse of his captivating creations.
