Artist Interviews
Vickram Sethi on present and future of Indian art
“Art is about looking without any prejudice and approaching subjects without bias or preconceived notions.”
So says Vickram Sethi, the brain behind Art Expo India 2009, is also the founder of The Arts Trust that organizes exhibitions and hosts art camps. The Institute of Contemporary Indian Art (ICIA) serves as a logical extension of The Arts Trust to showcase a wide pool of talent and creativity.
He reveals that Art Expo India 2009 will create a space to see the context in which the art is produced and how far along the journey Indian art is. According to him, the result is a collection of the very best art India has to offer that gives an insight on the contemporary art trends.
Vickram Sethi adds: “We certainly need to make art far more accessible. There’s apparently a lack of a museum culture within the country and we do not have enough grants- public or private funding - to help introduce Indian artists on both an external and internal level. Our theme for the expo is emerging contemporary Indian art and its thriving relationship with the international art.”
There is no single platform to give artists an opportunity to exhibit works internationally, he points out in an interview given to in an interview to The khaleej Times on eve of Art Expo, 2009, “There are currently three main challenges faced by the Indian art market: international exposure, an unorganized art market, as well as limited collectors and buyers.” These factions all interlink and tend to affect each other. A lack of consolidated resources for its art scene does not really help.
