Sujata Bajaj’s vivid kaleidoscope
Colors, in all their glory, define a vivid kaleidoscope of Sujata Bajaj’s work that has been widely exhibited internationally.
Sujata Bajaj’s usage of rich colors coupled with her aesthetic sensibilities – a byproduct of her European sojourn – add a dynamic touch to her oeuvre. She has been quoted as saying on eve of her recent solo show in Pune: “I belong to Rajasthan, a state home to vibrant and colorful traditions, and it’s natural to get inspired by colors.”
The artist owes her rise to international fame, in part, to Pune and is proud to be attached to the city. It was here that her artistic thought processes were first shaped. The upward graph of her journey since then is well known. After her high school studies in Jaipur, Sujata Bajaj moved to Pune and enrolled at the SNDT College.
After her Bachelor’s and Master’s in Painting she had her debut show at the Bal Gandharva art gallery in 1978. The show received a good response. At one of her shows she happened to meet renowned painter S. H. Raza, who continues to be her mentor.
There is a continuous thread that pervades their practice – unbounded energy. Numerous layers are worked upon with a blend of restraint and impetuosity. Aqueous forms constituting layers of memory palpitate with quiet energy. And one encounters a style brimming with this energy, whatever the medium might be.
