Dubai Art Fair 2009
Indian galleries were satisfied with the response from the buyers and the art enthusiasts.
Although the recession expectedly took its toll on the just concluded Dubai art fair 2009, the five Indian galleries (from the total 60) were satisfied with the response from the buyers and the general art enthusiasts. Though, they agreed the response last year was far better.
Sree Goswami from Project 88 said, “We met a lot of interesting people. There were a lot of inquiries (for sale).” The huge installation of bulls by Valay Shende at the Sakshi stall was quite a hit among fair viewers. Geeta Mehra of Sakshi said, “There are a lot of inquiries, especially from the local art collectors. We’ve made quite a statement.”
Shireen Gandhy of Chemould Prescott has already sold a few art works. She was quoted as saying: ” I came without any expectations, but things have turned out well.” She adds, “Last year people were in a hurry to buy. This year, it is more relaxed as people know that the works are going to be around.”
Bodhi’s Sharmistha Ray shared a similar opinion. She stated, “Two years ago, things were very different. Though we did manage to sell a couple of works, and I can well say that it was worthwhile coming here.” Mamta Singhania from the Delhi based, Anant gallery said, “We received a phenomenal response.”
