Ranjani Shettar Solo at San Francisco Art Museum
The San Francisco Museum solo of internationally recognized artist from India
Ranjani Shettar means another milestone in her successful career.
The Bangalore based artist has already received much international exposure, participating in biennials in Lyon, France; Sharjah, the UAE; Sydney, Australia and the Carnegie International. Solo exhibits of her work have been launched by the Museum of Modern Art of Fort Worth, Texas and the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA), in Boston. Talwar Gallery now hosts new works by her at SFMOMA (March-July, 2009).
Ranjani Shettar’s oeuvre is primarily made up of sculptural installations, which juxtapose traditional craft and new-age techniques. The artist employs a number of time-tested traditions in her work, like tamarind kernel powder paste and kasimi (black dye).
Though these practices are rooted in tradition, her art practice itself is contemporary at core- both in her approach to sculpture and in the subject matter. Her work thus invariably generates an open-ended physical experience for the viewer. It questions the fundamental principles of sculpture through stunningly sensual forms.
Additionally, her work ‘Me, No, Not Me, Buy Me, Eat Me, Wear Me, Have Me, Me, No, Not Me’ is to be installed in the Rooftop Sculpture Garden of SFMOMA when it opens in May along with other artists to be featured in the inaugural exhibition.
