Things to keep in mind while buying art

If you think yourself a serious investor, you should take following aspects into consideration as advised by Kishore Singh of The Business Standard in a recent article:Sakti Burman canvas

  • You won’t be able to launch your quest to be a serious investor with anything less than Rs 20 lakh.
  • You may invest more money by opting to turn around a part of your existing collection, but the exercise should ideally add to the original kitty instead of simply becoming the kitty);
  • You should carefully select a repertoire of works at the beginning. Purchasing a single Sakti Burman canvas cannot be termed an investment.
  • To make sure that your investment portfolio does not face any sudden shock, see to it that you pick a couple of artists for diversification purpose instead of the great risk of hedging your bets on one single artist. Do so with some thought to theme and content.
  • Your collection must be ruthlessly weeded. Any particular buying/selling decision should be guided by the mind preferably and not the heart even while you continue to enjoy your choice of artworks.
  • You should ascertain that you work in collaboration with renowned galleries, willing to take the requisite responsibility for prices, and also for filling in gaps that, you might struggle to plug yourself as an investor.
